William Iv - Head of Upchurch clan 9

     William Upchurch was born in Brunswick Co., Virginia, about 1726, the son of Michael Upchurch III, a veteran of the Revolutionary War.  William’s grandfather, James Upchurch, was born in Virginia and died there in 1765.  His great-grandfather Richard Upchurch I was born about 1658 and died before 1700.  His great-great grandfather, Michael Upchurch (1624-1681), was the original American Upchurch immigrant who came to America about 1638.   
 
     William married Sarah [last name unknown] in Virginia and they moved to Granville Co., NC for a brief time.   Three sons were born in Granville Co., but by 1782, the family had settled in Wilkes Co., NC.  Although William IV did not acquire land in Wilkes Co. before his death there in 1787, he did leave a will.  He left his estate to Sarah for the support of their children and, in the event of her death, he instructed that his children William, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Amey, should each receive one shilling Sterling.  His son David was to receive the horse and son John was to receive the mare.  The rest of the estate was to be divided equally between the surviving children.   
 
     One of the witnesses to William’s will was Isaac Martin, who must have been a friend or neighbor.  In 1794, seven years after William’s death, his widow Sarah purchased 105 acres of land from Isaac and Margaret Martin there in Wilkes Co., NC.  Sometime within the next six years, Sarah relocated to Greenville Co., SC, in time to be counted in the 1800 Census.  She listed her age as 45 plus and oversaw a household of two daughters, ages 16-26, and two slaves.  Her son John also migrated to Greenville Co., but established his own household with his wife and children.  Sarah retained the 105 acres until 1802, when she sold the tract to Thomas Sales.  For further information, please consult the book Upchurch Story by Olive Morgan and the video on William Upchurch IV at www.upchurchstory.com.
