IMAGES Among several categories of Allied Families resources such as Biofiles and Annotated Cemeteries , our Image Resource File is destined to be equally important. For many decades family historians have lamented about the existence of boxes of photos that seem important, but are ill-defined and seemingly headed for the dust bin. Now with our digital procedures, we have a powerful tool.
Collaborators of our Allied Families Association will be invited to share their photos at our Allied Families Headquarters in Chesterfield, Mo or at our Cary Facility on Kildaire Road in Cary, NC. Photos can then be scanned and thereby captured digitally. The originals can immediately be returned to the owner. However, it is imperative that the owner provide as many details as possible about the photo such as names, dates, location and family connections. Those details will become a part of our digital file for the photo. At present we will lodge photos and their associated commentaries in a file for this purpose on Dropbox. Here the photos can be readily shared with others. The commentaries will be searchable and, over time, some of the photos may be transferred to one of our two websites. Our unfolding Image Resource File will serve several purposes: * Valuable photos will be described and preserved for the long term. * Photos will be linked to family narratives. * Sharing of photos will be greatly enhanced. * We anticipate launching a "photo restoration project" * It is hoped that our willingness to preserve photos will attract cooperators who might not otherwise become involved with Allied Families. All are encouraged to look at images that have been archived to date to get a better idea of this aspect of our Allied Families program of work. |
