ENROLLED FAMILIES
A principal focus of Allied Families is to collect, organize, and share information for specific families and to preserve the information for the long term. Ideally each family will be headed by a person who lived about the time of the American Revolution. Each enrolled family will be assigned a unique Enrolled Allied Family Number or AFEF Number. The amount of information displayed for a given family will depend on collaboration from family members and on financial support to be provided by the members.
Detailed information on a given enrolled family will be developed as appropriate. Typically, a narrative will introduce the patriarch or matriarch of the family with a few details about dates, locations, and unique attributes extending to some of the early descendants. Any uncertainties or puzzles will be portrayed. For each enrolled family, the plan is that a public family tree owned by Allied Families will be generated and upgraded over time. A coordinator will be assigned for each such public tree by Allied Families, Inc.
The UAFA maintains a large family history collection created by Robert Phillip Upchurch and cooperators reaching back over 50 years. The collection consists of records for Upchurch and related families that lived in a series of enclaves in various states from the American colonial era. Included are over 200 books and many deeds, wills, pension applications, manuscripts, census records and the like. Of special importance are Biofiles on about 400,000 individuals with entries revealing details about those individuals and their place in a family or community. Certain portions of this vast collection, or references to them, are being digitized and placed online in a UAFA resource base. The narrative for each enrolled family will cite components of the resource base in a way that will allow the members of a given enrolled family to easily see referenced material pertaining to their family. Certain details in the collection that are impractical to digitize, such as books can be accessed on a negotiated basis for a given family on a case by case basis.
The commitment on how much material to include for a given enrolled family will be negotiated between Allied Families, Inc. and co-sponsoring family members. A list of co-sponsors will be comprised of all individuals who have contributed at least $50 in support of a particular enrolled family. Enrolled families will have a narrative posted when support has reached $200. When contributions have reached $500, a periodic e-newsletter will be initiated for the members of the family for whom email addresses are known. Contributions beyond $500 will be used to build a long term support fund for the given enrolled family. The income from that fund will be used to equally support UAFA and the enrolled family.

The concept of enrolling
families has been well received. In the
months following the organization of UAFA in late 2013, contributions were
received allowing narratives to be put in place for several families. Just how the concept works is best
illustrated by examining the details presented for the already enrolled
families. To view these family narratives and request an invitation to view up to three family trees on Ancestry.com, you must obtain the password to enter the "Specific Families" tab, which is shown just under the "Enrolled Families" tab on the above menu bar. To obtain the password, enter your name and email address above and hit the Submit button.
