                                                   A Brief Review of the Life of Charles Upchurch, his Children and Grandchildren
 
            Charles Upchurch was born February 11 1755 in Granville County, North Carolina and died in Henry County, Georgia in 1842.  His father Richard Upchurch II (ca. 1725-1798) had moved to North Carolina from Virginia about 1755.  His grandfather James Upchurch was born in Virginia and died there in 1765.  His great grandfather Richard Upchurch was born ca. 1658 and died in 1700.  His great-great grandfather Michael Upchurch (ca. 1624-1681) was the original American Upchurch immigrant who came to America about 1638. 
 
            Charles was the brother of Nathan, Richard Jr, Moses, Benjamin, James (?), Jubal (?), and Abel (?).  In 1779 Charles Upchurch was granted 500 acres of land in Wake County, “on the N side of Moccasin Creek and on Turkey Creek” by the state of North Carolina, This part of Wake County would later be absorbed into Franklin County. It is possible that Charles Upchurch may have served in the Revolutionary War
 
In the 1790 Franklin County, North Carolina census, Charles was listed as head of household.  The census went on to list these members of the household:

In the 1800 Franklin County, North Carolina census, a listing for Charles Upchurch has 7 in his family along with 3 slaves.

As indicated by deed records and court minutes from Franklin County, North Carolina, Charles was active in the years 1790 – 1816 purchasing and selling land and other items. He owned over 500 acres of land near Moccasin Creek area at time of his death.  He was listed as having taxable property in Franklin County from 1804 through 1815.  Records also indicate that he was active as both an overseer and as a juror in the county.  Charles was described as “deceased” in a record from 1819. 
 
Charles Upchurch (born ca. 1755 and died 1842) married a woman, nee Gay, based on the fact that they named a son Thomas Gay Upchurch.  However, convincing evidence on this point has not surfaced as of 27 Mar 2013.  The Gay and Upchurch Families lived near each other on the wake/Franklin county border from 1755 on and had many interactions.

Notes for Calvin C. Upchurch:
This is Calvin C. Upchurch, son of Keaton Upchurch, grandson of Charles Upchurch. He was born in Henry County, Georgia 16 Aug 1936 and died 4 Aug 1932, and is buried in Bethany Church cemetery in McDonough, Henry County, Ga. He did serve during the Civil War as a Confederate soldier, but came back and lived out his life with his family. He is my 2nd great grandfather through his son William Thomas Upchurch (W.T.) Calvin C's military records, my grandmother's information and pictures, pension records, obituary, etc. all validate this information. There has been much confusion over the "Calvins" in this part of the family tree and it hasbeen propagated throughout Ancestry among people with this line of Upchurches in their family. Calvin E. Upchurch, son of Henderson Upchurch, grandson of Eaton Upchurch (who was Keaton's brother) was born in 1839. He also served in the Civil War as a Confederate soldier. He was not married and died in Richmond, VA in 1862 at Chimborazo Hospital. Census record, and his military records support this. My best guess is that he was buried at the hospital in a mass grave. At some point, the Sons of the Confederacy placed a headstone with Calvin E's name on it on Calvin C's grave at the Bethany cemetery, thus, setting off the confusion of who was who. I have been trying to find out who to talk to in the McDonough SoC group to have the headstone moved and place the correct one on Calvin C's grave, but have not been successful at this time.
