Sherwood Upchurch Clan 10
Sherwood Upchurch, son of Michael Upchurch III, was born in Virginia about 1771. Olive Morgan, in her book UPCHURCH STORY, reports on Sherwood Upchurch and his children (pp 39 - 41). She was especially interested in Sherwood as he was a brother to her ancestor. George Upchurch, head of Upchurch clan 5. She gives thanks to Erwin Thomas Upchurch, who helped with the records for Sherwood. However, neither Olive or Erwin could locate any present descendants of Sherwood. UAFA are proud to announced the discovery of a flock of Sherwood's descendants located primarily in Texas. The principal correspondent to this group is Angela Vondell Upchurch Frans. She is a 4x granddaughter of Sherwood. Angela is a recent and enthusiastic convert to genealogical research and continues to supply much information on the descendants of Sherwood Upchurch.
According to Morgan, Sherwood Upchurch was one of the thirteen Upchurch Families listed on the 1790 Federal Census. He was living in Rutherford County, North Carolina at the time. Prior to that, in 1787, Sherwood was on the Personal Property Tax List for Brunswick County, Virginia. In 1798, Sherwood received 50 acres of land, on Bell's Branch of Cathy's Creek of the Second Broad River in Rutherford County, NC, from his father-in--law. In 1802 he received a land grant of 75 acres at the head of Long Branch of the Second Broad River. Sherwood married Elizabeth Tomberlinson on 21 Oct 1790. Elizabeth apparently died, and Sherwood then married Mary (Polly) Pell in 1804. In the 1850 census, we find Sherwood and Mary and their son, Joseph residing in the home of John and Elizabeth Tomlin in Campbell County, GA. Elizabeth Tomlin was the daughter of Sherwood by his first wife. It is believed that some of the descendants of Sherwood continue to reside in Rutherford County, NC, and in the surrounding counties. It should be noted that Michael Upchurch III, the father of Sherwood, was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, so that descendants of Sherwood would be eligible for DAR or SAR status.
The Sherwood Upchurch Clan is an interesting one. His great-grandson, John Benjamin Upchurch, became a minister in Texas and had many memorable experiences. General Pershing Upchurch, a son of John Benjamin Upchurch, was named after the famous World War One General. Coincidentally, General Pershing Upchurch served as a sergeant in the Second World War and was the driver of the first American tank to move onto German soil. Thus the Upchurch family gains another footnote in American military history.
An outline of the Sherwood Upchurch Clan, to the extent that details are available, is provided below. Each of the nine children of Sherwood Upchurch may be considered to head a sub-clan in the Sherwood clan.
